ARTWORK: Living Radio Lab

Open Wave-Receiver is an artistic research project by Shortwave Collective that uses found materials to create self-powered radio receivers, opening access to sounds travelling on the invisible electromagnetic waves surrounding us. The radio receivers are built in their simplest form and have only a small number of interchangeable parts: a coil, an antenna, a ground, a diode and a way to listen. Designed without a tuner, the radios are open to multiple frequencies.

Throughout the Biennial, Shortwave Collective’s Living Radio Lab invites visitors into the process of developing, experimenting and listening with Open Wave-Receivers, to notice the fragile, uncertain pluralities of radio-listening within the interconnectedness of different spaces, bodies and materials. This way, rather than focusing on content, clarity or strength of signal, the work tends to the systems, infrastructures and ecologies that radio is a part of. 

Shortwave Collective is an international group of 10 creative practitioners from various backgrounds and disciplines (sound and radio art, activism, social science, media and artistic research) brought together by an interest in feminist practices and the radio spectrum. Their practice involves experimenting with artistic uses of radio, collective listening and a process of DIY / together-with-others as accessible and sustainable methods in order to demystify aspects of technology. Throughout the biennial, Shortwave Collective will run a living lab, inviting visitors into the process of developing and listening with Open Wave-Receivers – simple radio receiving devices that provides site- and time-specific access to the sounds travelling on the invisible electromagnetic waves surrounding us.
