Sounds of foreign, far-away and unknown places will be all around Struer during this year’s Struer Tracks – Urban Sound Art Festival. Curator Christian Skovbjerg Jensen and the first artists are ready to make Struer a city that listens.
Struer Tracks is a festival for sound art in public space. For this second edition curator Christian Skovbjerg Jensen has asked artists to consider what we should be listening to?
Instead of tuning into what is already present, artists will bring or materialize something new to Struer. Foreign sounds, forgotten sounds as well as enhanced sounds that we are otherwise not able to hear. We will be listening out for foreign, unknown and far-away places. We will be tuning into connections, departures and transits: to a town in Russia, radiation from space and endangered species. During Struer Tracks #2 Struer will be a city that truly listens to the world.
In 1948 the city of Struer received the sculpture Sarpsborgpigen by Kaare Orud as a gift from the citizens of Norwegian Sarpsborg, showing gratitude for urgent aid in the first months after WW2. The sculpture of a young woman sending of a seagull today stands facing north at the Struer harbour and commemorates bonds between two cities. Struer Tracks #2 wants to articulate more ties between Struer and the ever-changing world.
Christian Skovbjerg Jensen is a freelance curator and the director of Inter Arts Center, a platform for artistic research and experimentation, established by the Faculty of Performing Arts at Lund University, Sweden, in 2010. He has curated a wide range of public and collaborative art projects, such as Sit down! (2006). In 2010 he was the artistic director of TUMULT, an international art festival, with new commissioned works by 21 artists who contributed with new public projects made especially to the area of Lolland, Falster, Moen and Vordingborg.
